The green line

Italian shuttle diplomacy across the 'Green Line' dividing Mogadishu has persuaded Hussein Mohamed Farah 'Aydeed' and Ali Mahdi Mohamed to resurrect the October 1996 peace deal, brokered by Kenyan President Daniel arap Moi, which collapsed within days. Despite vitriolic exchanges since January's Sodere agreement (AC Vol 38 No 2), Rome's envoy, Ambassador Giuseppe Cassini, persuaded the two leaders to try again to dismantle check points along the Green Line and to form a joint police force and a ceasefire committee. Hussein Aydeed agreed to lift his late father's ban on Sigurd Illing, European Union Ambassador to Somalia.
