The SPLA is fighting in the North for 'national unity' but what about the South?

The National Democratic Alliance's military gains in the north (AC Vol 38 No 3) have distracted attention from the continuing problems of Southern politics. While some opposition leaders talk as if their tickets were already booked for the triumphal return to Khartoum, Sudan People's Liberation Army commanders question the results of nearly 14 years of struggle. Should the National Islamic Front government fall tomorrow, the SPLA would hold only one provincial capital, Yambio in Western Equatoria, where many Azande locals consider the SPLA an army of occupation, a view reinforced by last year's pressganging of schoolboys into the SPLA.
