Across the river

Money is sloshing around Brazzaville. The Kinshasa bourgeoisie (new and old) has fled across the river and is making its presence (and its money) felt. So are the serried ranks of the 4,000 Belgian, French and United States' soldiers, some of whom camp out at the airport and even the tennis club, and drive ostentatiously up and down. They are officially there to evacuate their nationals fleeing Zaïre. Yet they far outnumber the troops sent for that task during Congo's troubles in the early 1990s, while the expatriates concerned are far fewer.
