Policing the vote

There is another way to influence election results, without tampering with the actual vote: to encourage or discourage turnout by using the security organisations. Opposition parties claim that the governing People's Democratic Party (PDP) has exploited its control of state security institutions to arrest All Progressives Congress (APC) activists and intimidate party officials and supporters under the guise of preventing outbreaks of electoral violence. In the north, the added threat of insurgent terrorist attacks gives the security agencies another pretext to crack down on oppositions and dissidents.
