A rerun is likely after parliamentary polls degenerated into chaos and confusion
Instead of confirming Mali's status as a multiparty democracy, the first round of legislative elections on 13 April, produced chaos at polling stations, an opposition boycott of the remaining rounds and streetfighting in the capital, Bamako. International observers, while not alleging deliberate fraud, saw serious irregularities and enough confusion to question the validity of the polls. However disorganised the elections, it is clear the ruling Alliance pour la Démocratie au Mali (Adema) has consolidated its base since it was first elected in 1992.
