Mixed Marriage

The wedding of the Kenya African National Union and the National Democratic Party was consummated in a carnival atmosphere at the Moi International Sports Complex outside Nairobi on 17 August. Some 6,000 delegates (4,500 KANU, 1,500 NDP) agreed to fight the next election as one party, leaving details about party structures and names to a joint task force. Raila Odinga of the NDP claimed that Kenya's new union would'strike a death blow to ethnic chauvinism' (meaning Kikuyu politics; he leads the Luo).
