The race to succeed

Since President Chiluba promised to go, the race to follow him is on - covertly

The knives are out as the ruling Movement for Multi-party Democracy, bereft of a natural successor to President Frederick Chiluba, begins its pre-election finagling. Chiluba could yet cancel his promised retirement and nothing can be ruled out. With up to 18 months before the elections, few cabinet members will dare to violate Chiluba's ban and proclaim their presidential ambitions. The controversial Environment Minister, Ben 'B.Y.' Mwila, did so and is now suspended as MMD national Treasurer. His colleagues are keen to hold on to jobs peppered with perks. Behind closed doors, though, people are chattering quietly.
