Gbagbo's next test

The nation's troubles are not over yet. On 10 December, elections for the National Assembly will follow the 22 October presidential election. This is the poll in which Laurent Gbagbo, of the Front Populaire Ivoirien (FPI), came to power with 59.4 per cent of the votes on a turn-out of only 37.4 per cent of the electorate (AC Vol 41 No 21). One of the new President's first tasks will be to organise a poll which may call his own victory into question.
