Vote for the big bucks

Late last year, the African National Congress ran out of cash. It could not pay its 500 staff their November and December salaries on time or give them Christmas bonuses. Now it dominates the election campaign, financially as well as politically. At 70 million rand (US$10.6 mn.), its election budget was less than half that of 1999 but more than double that of the opposition Democratic Alliance (DA). Party officials won't say how much went to the advertising firm Ogilvy & Mather RSTM for managing the media campaign.
