Under arrest, again

Darfur burns as the US deadline for a peace deal for the South draws near

The National Islamic Front claims to have foiled a coup attempt but its arrest of senior military officers and NIF founder Hassan Abdullah el Turabi owes more to pressure from Darfur and from Washington than El Turabi's plotting. The United States has stepped up pressure on Khartoum for a final peace deal by early April amid growing outrage at what many call the regime's 'genocide' in the western region of Darfur. As we went to press, we learned that as many as 700 officers and several thousand ranks were down for arrest, mainly westerners and El Turabi supporters.
