China Development Bank eyes the Grand Inga

China Development Bank has expressed its interest in backing Congo-Kinshasa’s colossal Grand Inga Dam project. The announcement was made during the visit of Zou Lixing, a CDB Vice-President, to Inga on 10 September and the timing is crucial. Later this month, the African Development Bank is due to present the Kinshasa government with its plan for the building of Grand Inga – whose estimated annual potential output is 39 gigawatts – and associated power lines and plant. At stake are some US$80 billion in contracts and enough electricity to power a pan-African industrial revolution.
