In early February, Lee Suk-chae, Chief Executive of South Korean telecommunications firm KT (formerly Korea Telecom), indicated that he would be bidding for the 53% stake in Maroc Télécom held by France’s Vivendi. The deal could be worth more than US$6 billion. KT will compete with France Télécom, Qatar’s Qtel and United Arab Emirates-based Etisalat. The Moroccan government holds a 30% stake in Maroc Télécom, which owns shares in telecoms companies in Burkina Faso, Gabon, Mali and Mauritania.
