Human rights abuses in Katanga

Amnesty International publishes a damning report on the results of mining operations in Congo-Kinshasa

‘Mining operations in the DRC have resulted in decades of abuse against artisanal miners and the neighbouring communities,’ according to Audrey Gaughran, Director of Global Issues at Amnesty International. Western companies are under pressure to ensure that minerals from Congo-Kinshasa are not linked to violence and instability there. Chinese companies, however, are not subject to the same rules and contribute to human rights abuses in the artisanal copper and cobalt sector in Katanga Province, says a new report from Amnesty.
