Caught by a surprise inspection, the Chinese company that has worked in the Bongor Basin since 2007 faces huge financial and reputational losses

Chad has frozen the activities of China National Petroleum Corporation after inspectors found the company was dumping waste oil in holes dug in the ground in the Bongor Basin. If the Chinese company wants to restart its business in Chad, it now faces the difficult task of regaining President Idriss Déby Itno’s confidence and meeting the government’s demands.
