Huawei in corruption probe

Telecoms equipment left unclaimed at the port leads to a government investigation into the Chinese company

Ethiopia has launched an investigation into the illegal import of US$13 million in telecommunications equipment in the name of Ethio Telecom by Huawei Technolgies. The inquiry will determine whether Huawei was attempting to avoid paying taxes by using the name of the state-owned telecoms company, many months before it sealed an $700 mn. deal to help expand Ethio Telecom’s network capacity (AAC Vol 6 No 11, Beijing will connect your call). China’s ZTE won the other half of the network-expansion contract this year.
