State’s oil role under fire

Amid criticism for a lack of transparency, the oil industry is still dogged by corruption claims

December's law governing the oil sector has not prevented it from attracting the attention of the Liberia Anti-Corruption Commission (LACC). Ten arrest warrants were issued late last month over allegations of corruption at the National Oil Company of Liberia. They date back to 2006 and one is for Senator Albert Chie, a former member of the Nocal Board. Many of the claims of illegality stem from the widespread practice of bribing members of parliament to vote the 'right' way and from individuals taking stakes in exploration licences.
