Diamonds’ best friend

Séléka is now out of an important diamond centre but the government prefers deals with Angola to restoring confidence to miners

Since 10 February, the town at the heart of the country's richest diamond-mining area, Bria, has been under the control of troops from France's Opération Sangaris and the United Nations' Mission multidimensionnelle intégrée de stabilisation des Nations Unies en Centrafrique. Yet there are fears that the interim government has not replaced the dominance of the fighters who were once part of the Séléka alliance with law and order. More energy seems to be going into negotiations over setting up a state diamond-marketing company with interests close to Isabel dos Santos, daughter of the Angolan President.
