Militant fighters ponder their options after Jonathan loses power and a showdown over oil theft looks likely

It has been a bad month for the Niger Delta in both personal and political terms. The death of activist lawyer Oronto Douglas on 9 April, after a long struggle with cancer, has robbed the Delta of one of its most articulate and effective representatives. A week earlier, Goodluck Jonathan, the first President to hail from the Niger Delta, conceded defeat to Muhammadu Buhari in the 28 March elections. Politically, the Delta is rudderless and there are rumbling threats of fresh violence against oil companies and the new order under the President-elect.
