The President’s new clothes

With an official turnout of less than half of the registered voters in the 13-16 April elections, President Omer Hassan Ahmed el Beshir consoled himself with a dictator-level majority of 94.5%. Armed with an official 5,262,487 votes and resplendent in robe and turban, the jubilant Field Marshal brandished his stick as he declared that 'the Sudanese people' had given the world, 'especially the colonial powers', a 'lesson in integrity'. He would now 'eliminate the terrorists and the insurgents': he was referring to the opposition with which he is supposed to be holding the National Dialogue.
