What's left of the left?

An important battle looms over policy and tactics

After two and half years of African National Congress rule, the political forces of the left are in disarray. In the face of the government' s determination to push ahead with a tough economic reform programme (cutting back public spending and trade tariffs) the triple alliance of the ANC, Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) and South African Communist Party (SACP) is on the brink of collapse. A motion at the militant National Union of Metalworkers (NUMSA) congress calling for the dissolution of the triple alliance was only narrowly defeated.
