Donors stop donating

The aid party is over. Industrialised countries are reducing their spending and postponing their promises

The message from the United Nations Financing for Development conference in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia last July could not have been clearer. At the summit, tasked with agreeing on how to fund the new generation of development targets, known as Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), only the European Union made a pledge on Official Development Assistance. It also pushed back to 2030 its promise finally to hit the target of devoting 0.7% of gross national income to ODA.
