Gaullist by belief and pragmatic by nature, Chirac gets nostalgic in Africa

When he came to power 14 months ago, President Jacques Chirac promised a new French policy for Africa. This he failed to deliver during his visit to Gabon and Congo on 16-18 July. Instead, he sought to redefine France's 'special relations' with its African former colonies. Though his first stop was in Libreville, Chirac kept his main speech for Brazzaville, following his mentor, General Charles de Gaulle, who inaugurated France's post-war relations with Africa at the 1946 Brazzaville Conference.
