Like Mandela and Mugabe, Masire has to settle the succession issue

On the face of it, Sir Ketumile Masire's Presidency has been a roaring success. For 16 years, he has run one of Africa's most stable and prosperous countries. Masire's Botswana Democratic Party has been in power for 30 uninterrupted years and the country has the highest level of foreign reserves per head in the world. Yet, as it struggles with new economic and political pressures, the showpiece looks a bit shabby.
