We split, they split

President Muluzi's coalition has broken up and so have the rival parties

Car crashes, corruption and conspiracies: President Bakili Muluzi's brave new Malawi looks too much like Kamuzu Hastings Banda's old one. Conspiracy theorists rarely allow politicians to die in genuine motor accidents, especially in Malawi. The death of former Inspector General MacWilliam Lunguzi in a car crash on 3 July aroused their worst suspicions. Lunguzi, who held security postings under Banda, had made enemies inside his own Malawi Congress Party, as well as in the ruling United Democratic Front.
