My uncle, the President

Hassan Gouled's nephew is leading the succession race but is yet to convince Paris

Ismael Omar Guelleh, chef de cabinet to President Hassan Gouled Aptidon, has won another round in the struggle to succeed his uncle as President (AC Vol 37 No 3). Hassan Gouled returned home in March after three months' convalescence in France (he fell ill during during last year's Francophone summit, AC Vol 36 No 25) to see rivalry between the two main succession candidates, Moumin Bahdon Farah and Guelleh, break out into the open. Guelleh emerged strengthened, though still unpopular, from the contest with Moumin Bahdon, long-time Foreign Minister and then Justice Minister until sacked on 27 March.
