A return match 

President Chiluba faces opposition of two kinds: from Western donors and from his predecessor 

Zambians are the clear losers in the three-cornered fight between President Frederick Chiluba, his predecessor Kenneth Kaunda and Western donors ahead of October's elections. Donors froze aid at the beginning of June to protest against Chiluba's attempts to keep Kaunda out of the elections. By 17 June, banks in Lusaka had run out of foreign exchange. Foreign investors who previously looked benignly at the Chiluba government are now running scared as political tensions mount and a mysterious bombing campaign has started up. The country's latest football tragedy on 17 June – in which at least fifteen people died after Zambia's 3-0 victory over Sudan in a World Cup qualifying match – was apparently precipitated by a bomb scare in Lusaka's stadium.
