Safer franc?

It is not only in Europe that there are worries about an eventual single currency

In April, French Finance Minister Jean Arthuis told a worried ministerial meeting of the Franc Zone in Chad that European Monetary Union (EMU) would not affect the mechanisms of the CFA franc. (EMU is due in 1999, though many experts are sceptical). This may not have entirely reassured the African delegates: in a monetary union, France would not entirely control its own monetary mechanisms, let alone other people's.
