After Bakili, Bingu

Malawians seemed reluctant to elect new President, Bingu wa Mutharika, the hand-picked successor to Bakili Muluzi as candidate of the ruling United Democratic Front (AC Vol 45 No 9). Only 54 per cent of electors voted on 20 May, down 40 per cent on 1999. Helped by party control of state resources and media, a supine Electoral Commission and opposition splits, Bingu got 36 per cent of the vote.
