Zeroual's next move

Disarray in the Islamist opposition is making the President more confident

Following his convincing win in November's election, President Lamine Zeroual faces the much harder task of holding legislative elections this year. Harder for him because he hasn't got a party behind him, although there have been suggestions that the former ruling party – the Front de Libération National – may team up with him. And harder for the competing parties, which face security problems far more acute than those in the presidential election, which the Front Islamique du Salut and other Islamist groups boycotted and threatened to disrupt violently. Indeed, some believe that a FIS splinter group may contest the elections to counter what it fears is a growing bandwagon behind Zeroual.
