Bongo's sure bet

The presence of 13 opposition candidates does little to blunt the certainty that the President will be re-elected

Two oppositionists may have rallied to presidential candidate Jean Ping at the last minute on 16 August but that won't be enough to stop President Ali Ben Bongo Ondimba from walking away with victory at the poll on 27 August. Although there is widespread discontent due to the economic impact of weak oil prices, the powers of incumbency are strong in Gabon, where the presidential poll is a single round and the ruling party gets preferential treatment from the state-run media.
