KANU has responded to demands for political pluralism by buying up the media

Once among Africa's liveliest, Kenya's newspapers are increasingly in the thrall of the ruling Kenya African National Union. Although President Daniel arap Moi won multi-party elections in 1992, donors and the bitterly divided opposition complained that, given KANU's power over the media, the polls were not really free. KANU now has assured itself of an even more striking advantage at the next elections, which are due by late 1997 but may be called earlier.
