Ramaphosa ready for launch

The Deputy President pays tribute to the ANC's heroes as he lays the groundwork for a presidential bid in all but name

The plush Mount Nelson Hotel at the foot of Cape Town's Table Mountain provided the perfect setting for the unofficial launch of the CR17 campaign, as Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa's 2017 presidential bid is known. He and his supporters are still coy about his presidential ambitions because the African National Congress frowns on overt lobbying for positions. However, in recent weeks, he has spoken out to criticise corruption and state capture, publicly expressing his concern about the state of politics in the country at carefully chosen events attended by senior ANC leaders and businesspeople. He is set to lead the national Heritage Day celebration on 24 September at Galeshewe Stadium, Kimberley, in the Northern Cape, an event usually addressed by President Jacob Zuma.
