Ethiopia

New meetings, old answers

Despite almost constant meetings of the top levels of the ruling Ethiopian People's Revolutionary Democratic Front (EPRDF), there are no signs of any real policy shift over the unrest in Oromia and Amhara. The late Premier Meles Zenawi's widow, Azeb Mesfin, who is often said to be at loggerheads with other party leaders, has not attended the meetings of Tigray People's Liberation Front leaders. The TPLF is the most influential of the EPRDF's constituent parties. Political liberalisation is not on the agenda, we understand. The EPRDF still believes the solution is to sack some officials and control the 'street' with an iron fist.
