Colliding worlds

European officials are starting to see the links between their own political ructions and economic and security crises in the Sahel

A string of Islamist attacks in Mali and Niger are another reminder of the limitations of the efforts at political and security reform of the past five years. The latest thinking in the European Union (EU), that northwards migration can be discouraged by stepping up development aid, looks like a dangerous delusion.
