Ethiopia

Shabaab fills Ethiopian vacuum

Ethiopia has been withdrawing forces from Somalia in order to help restore order at home, say military observers, and Al Haraka al Shabaab al Mujahideen has moved in to fill the vacuum. The government declared a state of emergency in early October in the face of widespread protests by Oromo and Amhara people. The troops have already left Bakool, Hiran and Galgadud, which were under unilateral occupation by the Ethiopian National Defence Forces, we hear. Some 12,000 Ethiopians are believed to have left but the Liyu Police, paramilitary units of Ethiopian Ogadeni Somalis, remain.
