More progress, less movement

The governing party is disappointing many with its response to mounting insecurity in the north

There was an air of festive predictability about the Second National Congress of the governing Mouvement du peuple pour le progrès, held in Ouagadougou on 10-12 March. Among those present were the First Lady, Togolese-born lawyer Sika Bella Kaboré (née Sika Bella Adjoavi), opposition leader Zephirin Diabré and the leader of the Front populaire ivoirien, Pascal Affi N'Guessan. Ironically, only a week earlier President Roch Marc Christian Kaboré had rolled out the red carpet for his Ivorian counterpart, N'Guessan's sworn political enemy President Alassane Dramane Ouattara. Delegates from around the country, the continent and from Europe and North America attended, as did a large contingent of traditional chiefs, whom the MPP can rely on to instruct rural populations to vote correctly.
