Bye bye Benkirane

With the Prime Minister now out of government, the Palace has won an important round in its battle with the Islamists

For now, King Mohammed VI's much anticipated move to replace Abdelilah Benkirane as Prime Minister seems to have ended a deep political crisis that lasted nearly six months. During that time, the leader of the Parti de la justice et du développement (PJD) was unable to form a government. Critics called the move by 'M6', which was carried out with some finesse, 'a royal coup'. Benkirane stood down without demur when ordered to by a delegation of four of the monarch's senior advisors on 15 March. M6 was back in Morocco following a long stay in Côte d'Ivoire but, symbolically, he decided not to tell 'Benki' in person.
