Gigaba raises sights still higher

Amid ANC rivalries for the succession, the new Finance Minister believes he could get the top job

The controversial Malusi Gigaba, the former Home Affairs Minister now elevated to the Finance Ministry, has been proposed by influential sections of the African National Congress as a compromise candidate to succeed Jacob Zuma as ANC and state President. Gigaba used to be President of the ANC Youth League and his promotion underscores the fact that the ANCYL remains one of Zuma's most trusted allies. Firmly in the Zuma camp, he could be a safe option if the party rejects Zuma's ex-wife, Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, at its National Elective Conference in December.
