Corruption during the Ebola outbreak is enfeebling the health-care system, according to secret audits

When nursing assistant Salome Karwah, an Ebola fever survivor who had appeared on the cover of America's Time Magazine as a Person of the Year in 2014, died after giving birth this February in Monrovia, it was front-page news. Time lamented that Karwah had been failed by Liberia's 'broken medical system' while the local Daily Observer complained that 'Our Celebrated Ebola Nurse' was 'Stigmatised to Death'. Karwah became a symbol of the fact that although enormous funds continue to flow into the system, health provision is just as bad as if not worse than before the Ebola epidemic.
