Luanda uneasy as poll approaches

Whether or not the rumours about the President’s ill health are true, the signs that his era is ending are already showing

The state of health of President José Eduardo dos Santos has long been one of Angola's best-kept secrets. So it has remained for the three months since he was rushed to a Luanda hospital. His absence is also causing problems in Angola's highly centralised government and unsettling the ruling Movimento Popular de Libertação de Angola as it campaigns for his would-be successor, João Lourenço, in the 23 August general elections. For all but its oldest members, the MPLA has known only one leader and the prospect of Dos Santos's absence is causing considerable anxiety, even to his critics in the party.
