Seek asylum elsewhere

A Rwandan former general exiled in South Africa, Faustin Kayumba Nyamwasa, has lost his official status as a refugee. Pretoria is using a May court ruling to improve its poor relations with Kigali, observers say. Seven years ago, three South African refugees and legal non-governmental organisations, including the Southern Africa Litigation Centre (SALC), challenged Nyamwasa's asylum on the grounds that it should not be granted to people suspected of mass killing. The former army Chief of Staff is wanted in Spain over allegations he was partly responsible for mass killings in eastern Congo-Kinshasa that claimed the lives of nine Spanish aid workers. South Africa's Supreme Court of Appeal revoked Nyamwasa's refugee status in May. Until then, the government had opposed the NGOs' application.
