Mutharika's uncertain future

Elections may be two years away, but corruption scandals are already making the ruling party's prospects look grim

Cashgate is the scandal which keeps on giving. Ever since the epic looting of the Treasury by government ministers and political parties broke surface in 2013, few politicians have been left untarnished and the court cases keep on coming. The electorate, in the meantime, has decided that President Peter Mutharika is no more deserving of their support than his deeply unpopular predecessor, Joyce Banda, or her own forerunner, Bingu wa Mutharika, the incumbent's late brother. Prospects for Mutharika's re-election in 2019 now look slim. The opposition parties are seeking money, new faces and a broad alliance to help bring this about.
