SACP on the ballot

The South African Communist Party (SACP) will stand in its own name in local bye-elections in the Free State Province on 29 November. It will be the first test of the party's new strategy to go it alone without the governing African National Congress. It may even end up running municipalities jointly with the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) if the number of seats they hold together outnumbers those of the ANC. The party has decided to break with the ANC and stand alone in the 2019 general election if Deputy General Secretary Cyril Ramaphosa is not elected leader of the ANC at its conference next month.
