Lungu's costly power play

Extending his time in office is the President's chief priority although a debt crisis looms amid volatile party realignments

Whether or not President Edgar Lungu manages to convince the Constitutional Court that he is entitled to a further term in office when his current one ends in 2020, his determination to prolong his rule is clear. Nor should his opponents doubt that he will hesitate to crush them, even if it means flouting the law. The President sees himself as beset by enemies, not least within the governing Patriotic Front, and this bodes ill for a legacy of political stability that has been the envy of Zambia's neighbours.
