The goodbye gets longer

After weeks of messy negotiations, Jacob Zuma is due to quit this month but will be spending more time with his lawyers

The latest deadline for Jacob Zuma's exit from the Presidency is 21 February. On that day the budget is due to be read in parliament, according to Baleka Mbete, Speaker of Parliament. The opposition parties have tabled yet another vote of no confidence in Zuma for the following day. Before that must come the President's State of the Nation Address which sets out the year's political and economic plans. That address will be read by Cyril Ramaphosa, insists his camp, frustrated after weeks of meandering negotiations to ease out Zuma. The assumption is that by then, Deputy President Ramaposa will have taken over the top job from Zuma.
