A Saint Valentine's Day massacre, of sorts

After Zuma's messy fall, new President Ramaphosa has to revive the economy, social welfare and his party

When it came, the end for Jacob Zuma came quickly. A week before, he was brusquely rebuffing polite entreaties by senior African National Congress politicians to resign from the state presidency. It all changed on 14 February, St. Valentine's Day. It started at dawn when the special investigation unit raided the Guptas' sprawling mansion in Johannesburg's leafy northern suburbs from which the family is accused of running a kind of parallel government in league with Zuma.
