'Usual suspects' face challenge

With two weeks to polling day, the field is surprisingly open among those wooing voters for the chance to succeed Koroma

To many, the scandal surrounding the government's misuse of IMF funds to prime the electoral pump for the benefit of the ruling All People's Congress typifies the country's parlous state. The economy is stagnant, inflation stands at 20%, and financial support from Western donors and multilateral institutions is on pause because President Ernest Bai Koroma's government will not grasp the nettle of far-reaching economic reforms, even though it has formally agreed to them. To cap it all, Freetown made an agreement with China to build a US$300 million airport in spite of numerous studies identifying it as a white elephant and warning that it could trap Sierra Leone in debt bondage for generations.
