Unbowed, Zuma seeks revenge

Attempts by the ousted President's supporters to defend their interests against reforms are triggering chaos in the regions

For ex-President Jacob Zuma and his allies, the election of Cyril Ramaphosa as leader of the African National Congress was a serious blow but by no means the end of the matter. Faced with criminal prosecutions, Zuma's allies are mobilising in four of the country's nine provinces to undermine the party's new leadership and derail its reform efforts. So serious is the party strife that it could overshadow the start of campaigning in national elections, due by the middle of next year.
