Peace in peril as Dhlakama dies

The death of Afonso Dhlakama, the commander of Resistencia Nacional Moçambicana (Renamo) who turned the guerrilla movement into a political party, contains risks to long-delayed reconciliation with the ruling party, Frente de Libertação de Moçambique (Frelimo). Dhlakama, 65, died of a diabetes-related illness as he was being evacuated by helicopter from his military base in Gorongosa national park on 3 May. Frelimo and Renamo fought a long and bloody civil war until 1992. President Filipe Nyusi expressed regret that he had not been able to help his 'brother' in time, despite the fact that under his leadership Frelimo had repeatedly tried to assassinate him.
