Ely Calil, 1945-2018

When British newspapers decided that Ely Calil was the mysterious architect of a spectacular failed mercenary operation to topple the government of Equatorial Guinea in 2004, the only photo they could find was a grainy, 30-year-old wedding photo of a serious-faced young man in a 1970s tuxedo. Calil died in his London house on 28 May.
